Michael Stephenson, founder and Senior Attorney at Bay Area Bicycle Law, began his career trying misdemeanor cases in Oregon as a public defender in 2007. Mr. Stephenson’s legal skills have been praised in open court by both state and federal judges, by opposing lawyers, and, of course, by his clients and their families. He is himself a skilled cyclist and is an expert at proving liability and damages in cases where a cyclist has been injured. In his spare time, he volunteers as a legal counsel for bicycle advocacy groups in California, including California Bicycle Coalition, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and others.

Prior to founding Bay Area Bicycle Law, Mr. Stephenson worked for Davis Wright Tremaine (DWT), one of the top 100 law firms in the United States, at its Portland, Oregon office.  During his time at DWT, he worked on many high-profile lawsuits involving some of the largest companies in the United States. He left DWT in January of 2010 to return to the San Francisco Bay Area and work exclusively on behalf of cyclists.

Mr. Stephenson’s legal writings have been featured in bicycle coalition newsletters, the State Bar Litigation Journal, the State Bar Professional Liability Newsletter, the Portland Business Journal, and other publications.

In law school, Mr. Stephenson was awarded “Most Outstanding Trial Advocate” at the American Trial Lawyers Association’s (now The American Association for Justice) West Coast Regional Trial Championships. He graduated top of his class with Honors at the University of Oregon Law School and was a Managing Editor of the Law Review. During law school he was also an extern for the Honorable Ann Aiken, the Chief Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Oregon District Federal Court. Mr. Stephenson was awarded the law school’s “Pro Bono Award” in recognition of his substantial volunteer legal work in defending low-income clients in hearings and jury trials in state court. Mr. Stephenson earned his Bachelor’s degree in three years at Brown University, Rhode Island.

Practice Summary
Practice Overview

Bay Area Bicycle Law is the only firm in Northern California to specialize exclusively in representing cyclists. The firm's attorneys have extensive experience working on bicycle crash cases.

Michael Stephenson started Bay Area Bicycle Law after moving to San Francisco in 2010. With a passion for cycling and for representing those most vulnerable on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Stephenson realized that many cyclists were being represented by general practitioners with relatively little experience working on bicycle collision cases. Some of these attorneys failed to appreciate the nuances of how traffic laws apply to bicycles or how insurance coverage can most effectively be used to help cyclists injured in a bicycle accident.

Outside of the courtroom, the firm's attorneys regularly participate in bike coalition sponsored events, teaching community members about bicycle laws and safety. By speaking with members of the community, the attorneys learn about the unique challenges cyclists face on the roadways and how to best situate their work to fit the community’s needs.

Without the efforts OF BABL I would never have received compensation for my accident. They were excellent advocates and obtained a reasonable settlement for my injuries. The always responded promptly to my inquires and were transparent in their costs and procedures. Good people who were a pleasure...

Lucy was in charge of my case and she was on top of every detail! She ensured that I was kept well informed of any changes and is an amazing negotiator. She negotiated 25% off my total medical bill, in addition to more than half off my ambulance bill. After getting the settlement from the third...

BABL is highly experienced and professional. Michelle Weiss handled my (complicated and protracted) case beautifully. Always very calm, straight and honest, I dont think another group could have handled my case any better. While of course it is regrettable to be in an accident which requires legal...

After getting hit by a car on a routine ride one summer day and (naively) thinking my insurance would pay for my four days of hospitalization, I learned of the small print in my policy. With that, I knew things were 'above my pay grade' and reluctantly turned to a lawyer. Bay Area Bicycle Law was...

I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle and sustained injuries. I was dreading the thought of dealing with the other party's insurance company while recovering so I looked into possibly getting legal representation. My wife actually found BABL and told me of their free phone consultation. Best...
