He has also been recognized as one of the Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers and as one of the Top Ten Criminal Defense Attorneys Under 40 in Alabama by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
Mr. Howie truly believes in service to his country and completed his service on Active Duty in the United States Air Force as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General Corps. He entered the Air Force through the Direct Appointment Program on May 27, 2005 and began his active duty service on July 3, 2005. His official date of separation from active duty was September 28, 2009.
Prior to joining the Air Force, Mr. Howie served as Chief of Staff to a representative at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. As an attorney in private practice he has excelled at serving clients throughout Texas, including Austin, Houston and Galveston, with effective and efficient legal representation in various civil and criminal matters, including personal injury, premises liability litigation, criminal defense, DUI litigation, debt collection, construction law, business law, contract law and family law.
As a government attorney, Mr. Howie's military career took him all over the United States. He first served for two years as a military attorney at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. He was last stationed at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Mr. Howie deployed to the Joint Task Force Civil Support to provide legal support for domestic operations related to the global war on terrorism.
While on active duty, Mr. Howie served in numerous capacities. He oversaw and managed a program in Tucson which provided legal assistance to deploying airmen on civil law matters, including wills, powers of attorney, general legal guidance on domestic relations, family law, personal injury, bankruptcy, consumer affairs, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), and Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Mr. Howie also tirelessly reviewed government contracts valued at over $25 million.
Mr. Howie prosecuted criminals and worked diligently as a trial attorney for the government, working to ensure justice and securing convictions in 17 courts-martial. One case he successfully handled led to the first and only life sentence imposed at Pope Air Force Base. Mr. Howie also acted as the government's representative and advocate in countless administrative proceedings.
Mr. Howie additionally served as Special Assistant to the United States Attorney at the Department of Justice. Serving as the sole federal prosecutor, he personally prosecuted over 300 federal cases involving an array of criminal offenses, including minor traffic infractions, larceny, theft, drug offenses, domestic violence, DUI and DWI litigation, as well as child neglect and abuse.
Mr. Howie has been a member of the Texas Bar since 2004 and the Alabama Bar since 2010. He is also a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas.
